Chapter 24

“Don’t move,” one of the gunmen shouted at Alex.

Alex held up his hands as if to surrender, then sprinted for cover, making his way to fall back behind a parked truck as several bullets caught him in his hand, back and calf.

The wounds the bullets inflicted on him didn’t even hurt anymore, as the stone healed him seconds after he was hit.

He peered around the corner of his sanctuary and tried to get a bead on the four men intent on killing him. He smiled grimly as he came up with a plan. It was daring, but he felt secure in the knowledge that the stone would protect him.

Clearing his throat and dusting his clothes off, he stood and faced the six men in jumpsuits, who were reloading their weapons.

Irritated, he fingered a hole in his shirt.

“Aww, now guys, that just ain’t cool. I just borrowed this shirt!”

He spat on the shirt and attempted to clean the red stain where one of the bullets had hit him.

“Any of you have any soda water?” he continued in a normal conversational tone.

Spitting again on the bloody shirt, he waved a finger at the assembled commandos. “The secret is to blot, not rub. Martha Stewart taught me that.”

The four men reloading their weapons stopped, momentarily dumbfounded as they watched Alex complain about the bullet holes in his shirt. They glanced at each other, unsure what to do next.

“Scott is so gonna kill me. He got this shirt at the very first Pearl Jam concert we went to.”

The mercenaries glanced at each other, each one stunned by what Alex’s casual attitude at being shot at. They trained extensively with their weapons and unless they were somehow suddenly firing blanks, they should have been able to cut this man down the second he stepped outside the laboratory building. The team reloaded their weapons and resumed firing on Alex.

Nine-millimeter cartridges are normally plenty lethal, but for Alex, the stone made it feel like he was being knocked off balance by the rounds as each of the four mercenaries emptied another magazine into him.

Alex just smiled back at them.

“Look, fellas,” Alex said in a conversational tone, withdrawing his pistol, “I’m not much of a killer. I’ve had to kill some of your buddies tonight in self-defense, but they made it me or them, and...” He shrugged. “I chose them.”

Alex racked the slide on his pistol, loading a bullet into the chamber and held it at his side, ready to pull the trigger on anyone who approached him or made any threatening moves.

“Pluuus...” Alex drawled, almost enjoying himself as he watched one of the soldiers make the sign of the cross while reloading his machine gun, “as you can see, you must have gotten your bullets on discount, because they ain't having too much effect on me tonight.

He approached the team of mercenaries, standing a few feet away. They wouldn’t miss from this distance.

“So,” he continued, “it appears to me you have two options: One, continue trying
